Nog meer inzetten op binnenvaart

De opwaardering van het Albertkanaal is bijna voltooid. De ophoging van de bruggen en verbreding van het kanaal zorgen dat vierlaags containervaart voor DV containers voortaan mogelijk wordt. Ook voor Gosselin is dit goed nieuws aangezien Logistics zwaar inzet op de binnenvaart als transportmiddel.

“Wij hebben veel oversized cargo waardoor we de hoogte van die bruggen wel echt nodig hadden,” zegt Operations Director, Marc Eennaes. “En kunnen we nu kruiplijncoasters (kleine zeeschepen met beperkte hoogte) tot bij ons te krijgen waardoor we ook ons breakbulk-verhaal verder kunnen uitbreiden. Ook de productiviteit gaat omhoog want Gosselin kan nu 25% meer containers per schip vervoeren.

Het Albertkanaal is de belangrijkste waterweg in Vlaanderen en behoort tot het Europese TEN-T netwerk. Het zorgt voor een vlotte verbinding tussen de Haven van Antwerpen en het Europese Hinterland. Met een minimale doorvaart van 9,10 meter voor alle bruggen, is het Albertkanaal nog interessanter voor Short Sea Shipping en projectcargo (grote goederen uit één stuk). Dagelijks houdt het kanaal tot wel 10.000 vrachtwagens van de wegen.

“Wij zetten onze schouders zeker mee onder de verdere benutting van de binnenvaart. Het Albertkanaal is de enige oplossing om grotere volumes te verwerken zonder het wegennet verder te belasten,” sluit Marc af.

The upgrade of the Albert Canal is almost completed. The elevation of the bridges and widening of the canal enables four-layer container shipping for DV containers in the future. This is also good news for Gosselin as Logistics heavily relies on inland shipping as a means of transportation.

"We have a lot of oversized cargo, which is why we really needed the height of those bridges," says Operations Director, Marc Eennaes. "And now we can even get coastal vessels (small seagoing ships with limited height) to reach us, allowing us to further expand our breakbulk operations. Productivity is also increasing as Gosselin can now transport 25% more containers per ship.

"The Albert Canal is the main waterway in Flanders and is part of the European TEN-T network. It provides a smooth connection between the Port of Antwerp and the European hinterland. With a minimum clearance of 9.10 meters for all bridges, the Albert Canal becomes even more attractive for Short Sea Shipping and project cargo (large goods in one piece). It also keeps up to 10,000 trucks off the roads daily.

"We are certainly contributing to further utilization of inland shipping. The Albert Canal is the only solution to handle larger volumes without further burdening the road network," Marc concludes.
